Upcoming Electric Hatchbacks In India: India’s transition to electric mobility is gaining momentum, with a surge of appealing electric hatchbacks entering the market. Models like the sleek Tata Altroz EV and the economical Renault Kwid EV are attracting buyers, while the highly anticipated release of Maruti Suzuki’s all-new electric hatchback promises to further accelerate this exciting shift towards a greener future.
India’s rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) market is forcing automakers to introduce a broader selection of low-cost models. Hatchbacks are expected to become especially popular because of their size, efficiency, and environmental friendliness. These vehicles are great for negotiating congested city streets, offering a greener and more pleasant alternative to regular gasoline-powered automobiles. Let’s have a look at some intriguing new electric hatchbacks that are predicted to have a significant influence on Indian roads:
Maruti Suzuki Electric Hatchback
Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to enter the electric vehicle market in a significant way with a new electric hatchback. This upcoming car, anticipated for release by 2026-2027, is expected to directly compete with the popular Tata Tiago EV in the compact electric vehicle segment.
This move reflects Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to offering electric options to consumers and capitalizing on the growing demand for EVs in India. Unlike past projects, this new hatchback will be built on a dedicated electric platform, signifying a shift towards “born-electric” vehicles from the company. This strategic move positions Maruti Suzuki to become a strong contender in the burgeoning Indian electric car market.
Tata Altroz EV
The Tata Altroz EV is an upcoming electric hatchback expected to hit the Indian market in January 2025. With a projected price range of ₹12.00 – ₹15.00 lakh, it will compete in the growing segment of affordable electric vehicles. Based on the successful Altroz platform, the EV version boasts a driving range of 306 km on a single charge, making it suitable for daily commutes and even occasional weekend getaways.
While official specifications are yet to be revealed, reports suggest it will likely borrow the powertrain from its sibling, the Nexon EV. This translates to a potential 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery and a 95 kW electric motor. This combination, coupled with the Altroz’s lighter weight and potentially smoother aerodynamic design compared to the Nexon, could translate to an impressive range and peppy performance for a city hatchback.
Renault Kwid EV
Renault Kwid currently exists only as a gasoline-powered hatchback, an electric version is expected to hit the Indian market sometime in 2025. This upcoming electric vehicle will likely share design elements with the Dacia Spring EV, featuring a closed grille, updated headlights, and blue accents. It’s anticipated to offer a driving range of around 230 kilometers on a single charge and compete with other affordable electric cars in the Indian market.
The Renault Kwid EV is an electric vehicle powered by a 26.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This battery provides the energy for a single electric motor mounted on the front axle, generating 33 kW (44 horsepower) and 125 Nm (92 lb-ft) of torque. This combination delivers peppy performance for city driving and offers a claimed range of up to 230 kilometers (140 miles) on a single charge according to the WLTP cycle.
