The BYD Seal EV is expected to make a strong case for itself in the entry-level electric car segment with its impressive range. The car’s rear-wheel drive (RWD) variant, equipped with an 82.5 kWh battery, boasts a claimed range of 570 kilometers on a single charge, according to the manufacturer.
This means that on a full charge, the car could potentially take you from New Delhi to Lucknow, a distance of about 490 kilomteres, with some range to spare. This is a significant advantage, especially for those who are concerned about range anxiety, a common fear among electric car drivers.
Fresh off its Malaysian debut, the BYD Seal electric sedan sets its sights on India, launching on March 5, 2024. While the global market enjoys three variants of this sleek five-seater, India will likely see just the base rear-wheel drive (RWD) version initially.
Beyond Range: BYD Seal EV Blends Power and Efficiency
The Premium and Performance models might arrive later, but for now, expect a car with strong ties to the Atto 3, likely imported via the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route. This launch marks another exciting step in India’s burgeoning electric vehicle landscape.
BYD Seal EV: A Cutting-Edge EV Platform
The BYD Seal is built on the same e-platform 3.0 as the BYD Atto 3, and it has a solid foundation. The India-specific variant will use an 82.5 kWh LFP battery pack with BYD Blade technology. This battery chemistry is known for its reliability and safety. The engine has a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor positioned on the back axle, which produces 230 PS and 360 Nm of peak torque. This combination allows the BYD Seal to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a quick 5.9 seconds.
Go Further, Charge Less: The BYD Seal EV Impressive Range
The electric sedan boasts an impressive driving range of 570 kilometers on a single WLTP cycle charge, making it a capable companion for long journeys. Despite offering ample cargo space with a 400-liter trunk and an additional 50 liters of frunk storage, the car maintains a curb weight of just over two tonnes. Furthermore, it incorporates an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture, which contributes to both its efficiency and performance.
BYD Seal EV Electrifying Powertrain
The Performance iteration of the BYD Seal incorporates dual electric motors, boasting a collective power output of 530 PS alongside a torque output of 670 Nm. With an assorted range of 520 km on a single charge and an impressive acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph in a mere 3.8 seconds, it sets a high standard in electric vehicle performance. Additionally, both variants come equipped with a 7 kW AC Type 2 charger, facilitating a full charge in approximately 15.2 hours in Malaysia.
Fast Charging for the BYD Seal EV
For quick and convenient charging on the go, the Seal will be equipped with a 150 kW DC fast charger. This powerful charger can significantly reduce charging time, taking just 37 minutes to reach 80% battery capacity from 10%. When it arrives, the Seal is expected to compete with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, and its estimated price is likely to start above Rs. 50 lakh (ex-showroom).
